Ultimate Kanchanjunga Trekking

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek in Nepal – A Remote Himalayan Adventure

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek in Nepal is one of the most beautiful and remote trekking journeys in the Himalayas. This spectacular trail runs along the Nepal-India-Tibet border, offering breathtaking views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak at 8,586 meters.

About Mount Kanchenjunga

Mount Kanchenjunga was first climbed in 1955 by British climbers Joe Brown and George Band. Later, in 1977, an Indian Army team completed the second successful ascent from the northeast ridge in Sikkim, India. Once believed to be the highest mountain in the world, Kanchenjunga continues to fascinate mountaineers and trekkers with its grandeur.

Highlights of the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek takes adventurers through the eastern Himalayas along sections of The Great Himalaya Trail. This trek is challenging and ideal for experienced and physically fit trekkers. The route passes through remote villages, ancient monasteries, and unspoiled natural landscapes, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Nature and Scenery

Lower altitudes are filled with blooming rhododendron forests, while higher regions showcase stunning alpine terrain. The trek reveals Nepal’s rich biodiversity, where pristine nature thrives under strict conservation efforts.

Accommodation and Meals

During the journey, trekkers are accompanied by skilled cooks who prepare delicious meals daily. Nights are spent in comfortable tents under clear Himalayan skies, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

Permits and Conservation

The Kanchenjunga region lies in the far eastern part of Nepal, close to Sikkim, India. Since access was restricted until the 1980s, the area remains largely untouched. Trekkers must obtain a special trekking permit to enter the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which protects the rare flora and fauna of this high-altitude ecosystem.

Why Choose the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is perfect for those seeking solitude, adventure, and authentic Himalayan culture. With its dramatic landscapes, cultural richness, and unspoiled beauty, it remains one of Nepal’s best off-the-beaten-path treks.

Day to Day Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Today, as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Trekking Planner Nepal will be waiting outside holding a company placard for identification. Upon meeting, the representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel in a private vehicle. The drive will take about 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

  • Day 02: Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (Flight) to Fikkal/Kanyam (Drive)

After breakfast, our guide will collect you from your hotel and accompany you to the airport. The short flight to Bhadrapur takes us over the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding hill and through some of the mountains Nepal is famous for. A free mountain flight! On arrival in Bhadrapur, we will drive to Fikkal/Kanyam, the heart of the tea plantation area of the country.

  • Day 3: Fikkal/Kanyam to Taplejung (Drive)

Get up, refresh, and have breakfast at the hotel. Then pack your bags and get ready to drive towards Tatopani from Pokhara. The drive will take about 6 hours, depending on road conditions. Tatopani, in English, means hot springs, so you can find many hot springs that can be used for rejuvenation.

After reaching Tatopani, you will begin your North Annapurna Base Camp trek. You will start the trek from Tatopani to Narchyang Village. The trek will last about two hours, depending on the pace. During the trek, you can see various hilly landscapes and walk through the forest area. By taking small breaks along the way and taking time for lunch, you will reach Narchyang Village.

Then settle into your accommodation, have dinner, and attend the briefing session for the following day. After the briefing session, head to your room for an overnight stay in Narchyang.

  • Day 4: Taplejung to Sekathum

Day 3 is the official start of the trek. The trail goes down from Taplejung to the Tamor River Valley and then follows the Ghunsa Khola upstream. You will walk on steep downhill paths, stone steps, and some short uphill sections. The route passes through forests and small villages with millet and maize farms, where you can see Limbu and Rai locals working.

Today you also enter the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, so permits are required. You will cross several suspension bridges and walk along rivers and cliffs. The trail is scenic but can be muddy and humid. Sekathum is a small village with a few basic teahouses offering simple rooms, local food, and limited electricity and mobile signal.

  • Day 5: Sekathum to Amjilosa

Day 4 is one of the steepest climbing days in the early trek. The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola and goes up through thick bamboo and rhododendron forests. You will cross several suspension bridges and walk on some narrow cliff paths, so careful walking is needed. It can be physically hard, especially for new trekkers or those with heavy bags.

Wild animals like langurs and red pandas live in this area, but they are rarely seen. There are very few villages on the way, though you may see yak herders and small seasonal shelters. As you gain altitude, you may feel tired or short of breath. Amjilosa is a very small stop with only a few basic teahouses and simple rooms, and nights can be quite cold.

  • Day 6: Amjilosa to Gyabla

After breakfast, we start walking through forests of pine, bamboo, rhododendron, and oak. As we go higher, the villages and local people show more Tibetan culture and lifestyle. Along the trail, you may see yaks, sheep, goats, and many kinds of birds.

After lunch, the trail continues uphill through thick forest and crosses a wooden bridge. We then reach Gyabla, where we stay for the night.

  • Day 7: Gyabla to Ghunsa

Today the trail continues through forest and passes Phale Village. This village was started many years ago by Tibetan refugees and is now used mainly as a winter settlement. We will have time to visit the village and see local handicrafts.

After that, we walk to Ghunsa, the largest village in this region. It has a police station, a health post, and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Office. Telephone and internet services are also available here.

  • Day 8: Acclimatization Day

We are now at a higher altitude and will go even higher in the coming days, so today is for rest and acclimatization in Ghunsa. You can relax, explore the monastery, or take a short walk around the village.

There is also an option to hike up a nearby ridge for better acclimatization. From the top, you can enjoy views of Jannu Peak. The hike takes about 5 hours round trip, and if you choose to go, we will carry a packed lunch.

  • Day 9: Ghunsa to Kambachen

Today, Jannu Himal can be seen clearly along the skyline. The trail goes gently uphill and leads to a green glacier valley. If we are lucky, we may see blue sheep or even a snow leopard.

We continue walking past a waterfall and then cross a landslide-prone section, where we move carefully and slowly.

  • Day 10: Acclimatization Day

We take another rest day to help our bodies adjust to the high altitude and prepare for our visit to the North Base Camp. Today, we can hike up a nearby ridge for beautiful views of Kanchenjunga.

  • Day 11: Kambachen to Lhonak

Today we walk mostly on rocky glacier moraine from the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The trail goes uphill over big stones, with great mountain views on both sides. This area is known as snow leopard territory, so we stay alert, though sightings are rare. It is also used as summer yak pasture, but there are no villages on the way.

  • Day 12: Day Trip to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, also called Pangpema, is the last point of the Kanchenjunga North Trek at about 5,143 meters. It gives amazing close views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and other high peaks nearby. The trail passes through remote villages, forests, high meadows, and glacier areas, making it a very adventurous trek.

There are no teahouses at the base camp, so trekkers stay at Lhonak and visit the base camp as a day trip. The area is wild and beautiful, with glaciers and big ice walls around. Good acclimatization and fitness are very important because of the high altitude. It is a hard but very rewarding destination.

  • Day 13: Lhonak to Ghunsa

We walk down from Lhonak (5,065 m) to Ghunsa (3,475 m), following the same trail back. We pass places like Ramtang and Kambachen and still enjoy views of Kanchenjunga’s north face. The air feels easier as we go lower, but the trail is rocky, so we walk carefully. Sometimes we may see blue sheep or signs of snow wildlife in this quiet valley.

We drop about 1,600 meters in altitude, and the dry mountain area slowly changes into green forest. By afternoon, we reach Ghunsa, a peaceful Sherpa village with wooden houses and prayer flags. We stay in a comfortable lodge and enjoy warm meals, giving our bodies good rest for the next part of the journey.

  • Day 14: Ghunsa to Sele Le

Today, the trail goes through a forest and along a grassy ridge. From there, we can see Ghunsa and Phole villages, and Mt. Makalu far away.

  • Day 15: Sele Le to Cheram

This morning, we start early towards Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. We cross Sinion La pass (4,450 m) and follow a ridge to Sinelapche La pass (4,830 m).

From here, the views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and its valley are amazing. We then go down a small trail to Cheram, the only village on this route, where we stay overnight.

  • Day 16: Day Trip to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp to Ramche

Today, we trek to Ramche and stop there for lunch. After that, we walk about 40 minutes to reach Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. The Base Camp is on the edge of the glacier and has Tibetan prayer flags around it. We then return the same way and stay overnight at Cheram.

  • Day 17: Ramche to Torongding

The trail goes down steeply from the alpine zone into temperate forest. You go back past Cheram and then turn west into thick rhododendron and pine forests. This area is part of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, so you might see wildlife like Himalayan monals, barking deer, or even red pandas.

The trail has steep steps, slippery switchbacks, and sometimes landslides. Trekking poles are helpful to protect your knees. Torongding is a quiet village with 2 teahouses and very few facilities. There is no internet, and charging devices may cost extra (around Rs. 300–500 per device). Water comes from natural springs but must be boiled or purified. This descent helps trekkers adjust to lower altitudes and improves appetite and sleep.

  • Day 18: Torongding to Rani Pul

Today, we walk downhill all day through a lush and humid area. The trail passes through bamboo groves, cardamom farms, and subtropical forests. Leeches are common, especially after rain, so wear leech socks or gaiters.

We pass Chhetri and Limbu villages, where traditional mud houses and terrace farming are common. People mostly speak Limbu, but basic Nepali is understood. Homes often use solar panels, and livestock like buffalo, goats, and chickens are everywhere. We reach Rani Pul by afternoon, a small roadside village with jeep access and a few eateries or guesthouses.

  • Day 19: Rani Pul to Taplejung (Drive)

From Rani Pul, a local 4WD jeep (usually a Mahindra Bolero or Tata Sumo) takes us back to Taplejung. The drive follows the Kabeli River and goes up through green ridges and farmland. This area is known for cardamom farming, which is the main income for local communities. Roads can be blocked during the monsoon (June to September), so plans may need to be flexible.

In Taplejung, there are hotels with private rooms, electricity, Wi-Fi, and hot showers—facilities not available in the trekking villages. You’ll also find ATMs, pharmacies, and local shops. Taplejung is the administrative and commercial center and the official endpoint for most Kanchenjunga treks.

  • Day 20: Bhadrapur to Kathmandu (Flight)

This long drive takes you back to the lowlands of Nepal. The route goes through Phidim, Ilam, and Fikkal—towns known for tea estates and busy markets. You’ll notice the landscape changing from Himalayan foothills to flat plains. The road is mostly paved after Phidim, but some parts are rough. You’ll arrive in Bhadrapur in the late afternoon or evening.

  • Day 21: Final Departure
